Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a chemical compound belonging to the group of phthalates that are used as plasticizers, substances that give elasticity and flexibility to materials (usually plastics). Chemical formula: C₁₆h₂₂o₄ Appearance: transparent, oily liquid without color (sometimes with a slight odor). Solubility: insoluble in water, but well soluble in organic solvents (alcohols, esters, etc.). Where it is used: in the production of plastics (PVC); in varnishes, paints, adhesives, sealants; in cosmetics (nail polish, perfume — as an odor fixative); in rubber products and cables. Danger: Dibutyl phthalate is considered a toxic substance, it can: irritate the skin and mucous membranes; disrupt hormonal balance (endocrine system); negatively affect reproductive health. Because of this, its use in children's toys, cosmetics, and medical products is restricted or prohibited in many countries.
